How to Make a Smooth Transition to a Retirement Home

Moving out of your house and into a retirement home does not have to be a daunting task. Your family and the staff at the home can help you make a smooth transition with these few simple steps.

Well before your moving day, start to downsize your belongings. Get used to living with the furniture you are bringing with you and no others. This will help you decide if you need more furniture or if you can do without some. Your family and friends can come in to assist you with cleaning out your storage areas before you move. This is a great way to help you get in the right frame of mind for living in a smaller space.

Once you move into your new apartment, try to keep a familiar environment with your favourite artwork and picture frames. If possible, arrange your living room the same way it was at your old house. Can you bring your own curtains and rugs with you? Making your space familiar by using your own favourite furnishings is a great way to help you feel comfortable in your new space.

Immerse yourself in the programs the building has to offer. It is a great way to meet other residents that have the same interests as you. Some retirement homes have a party once a month for newcomers; or a Happy Hour on Fridays. These types of settings are great for mingling around and introducing yourself to the other residents.

Invite your family and friends to a housewarming party. They can all come for a few hours to see your new space and check out the building. A lot of places have a special occasions room that you can reserve to host a larger amount of people that wouldn’t normally fit in your apartment.

Scheduling in your family’s next visit will help you adjust to living in a different space by knowing that you are not alone. The days can be long if you do not fill in some time with others and it can be nice to have something to look forward to each week.

Your new space could be in an entirely different neighbourhood than you are familiar with. If possible, you should go see what is walking distance from you. Maybe there is a great coffee shop around the corner or the downtown shops are a block away. Do you have a friend or family member that lives close by? Getting out of your building frequently will help you maintain your independence and give you that fresh air and exercise that is so healthy for you.
